Cover Story: Africa’s Renewable Revolution Gains Momentum

Africa is on the cusp of a clean energy transformation, with renewable energy projects gaining unprecedented traction across the continent. According to a recent report by Power Shift Africa, the economic case for renewables is stronger than ever, with potential fuel cost savings of $8.3 trillion by 2050, surpassing the $7.3 trillion investment needed for a 100% renewable energy system.

From Egypt’s ambitious green hydrogen plans, targeting 1.5 million tonnes annually by 2030, to Zambia’s Chisamba Solar Power Plant, now the third-largest solar installation in Sub-Saharan Africa, the continent is leveraging its vast solar and wind potential. However, challenges remain, including debt burdens and limited access to finance, which continue to hinder progress. African governments are urged to prioritize energy sovereignty and integrate renewable energy into broader development strategies to overcome these barriers.
